Washable Nappies
Washable nappies are increasing in popularity, and thank goodness. It is estimated that 8 million disposable nappies are taken to the refuse tip everyday in the UK alone. Obviously this has huge environmental consequences.
Washable nappies in my opinion are healthier for our babies. A study carried out by Partsch et al (2000) suggests that the higher temperatures recorded inside disposable nappies could be a factor in male sub fertility.
Disposable nappies are filled with chemicals to absorb the urine, these are in constant contact with our baby's delicate skin. Do we yet now the long term effects of these? I use them now for my third child and I would use them again and again. My daughter hardly ever has a sore bottom and I think this is also in part due to the fact that the nappy is likely to be changed more often as they are not as absorbent as disposables and therefore need to be changed slightly more often. Is that a bad thing? I think not.
Also if your baby is unwell you would be more likely to notice a reduction in wee a lot earlier therefore summoning medical attention sooner. I also believe and it makes sense that children are probably more likely to potty train quicker as they feel a wet sensation with the washable cloth nappy. And yes they are more economic than disposable nappies not only in terms of monetary spend to you the parent but also in terms of world energy consumption - disposable nappies levy a far heftier toll on the earths resources than washable nappie.
